Vic Fangio's future still somewhat uncertain as veteran DC mulls retirement
Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s future is still up in the air this offseason as he continues to mull retirement, sources confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark.
The Eagles are hopeful that the 67-year-old will return for the 2026 season.
Faced with a possible retirement, the Eagles this month reached out to former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon to gauge his interest in the job, Jimmy Kempski of Philly Voice reported. The Eagles were also reportedly planning on checking in with former DC Jim Schwartz too.
For now, though, it seems like Fangio will return for his third season with the Eagles in 2026. But the situation appears to be fluid. Fangio also contemplated retirement after the 2025 season.
Fangio has had great success over the past two seasons coaching the Eagles. His defense was 1st in yards and 2nd in points last season as the Eagles won Super Bowl LIX. And despite losing a bunch of pieces from that roster, his defense was again the strength of the team in 2025.
For a few seasons before landing Fangio, the Eagles chased Fangio’s defensive scheme but it has really helped them to have the mastermind behind it running the show.
Earlier this offseason, defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Christian Parker left the team to take the defensive coordinator position in Dallas. Parker had been viewed as a possible replacement for Fangio if and when Fangio ever decided to retire. So if Fangio does decide to step away, it would hurt that the Eagles already lost Parker.
Another internal option to replace Fangio could be defensive line coach Clint Hurtt. Hurtt earlier this offseason interviewed for the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator job and he has been an NFL defensive coordinator before.
Ultimately, though, the Eagles hope Fangio will return for the 2026 season.
