Flight delays and cancellations seen at South Florida airports after historic chill
Following a historic chill in South Florida caused by a winter storm, delays and cancellations are being seen at airports on Sunday, officials said.
According to officials at Miami International Airport, due to flight cancellations and record-low temperatures, bag processing has also been delayed.
At MIA, there have been 115 flight delays and 22 cancellations, while at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, there have been 86 delays and 39 cancellations.
Miami dipped to 35 early Sunday morning, the coolest since Jan. 10, 2010, when it also hit 35 degrees.
Fort Lauderdale also bottomed out at 35.
On Saturday night, there were reports of snow flurries in the Tampa Bay area.
The last two times the area got snow was flurries in January 2010 and December 1989. A record 2 inches (5 centimeters) of snow fell in January 1977, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Tampa.
Snow flurries were also seen in Tallahassee, according to NBC affiliate in Orlando, WESH.
A freeze warning for parts of South Florida will go into effect at 7 p.m. and will end on Monday at 9 a.m.
