Escondido checkpoint nets 3 DUI arrests

Three people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence during a weekend checkpoint, the Escondido Police Department said Sunday.

The checkpoint was set up Friday. EPD officials added that in addition to the DUI arrests, 31 motorists were cited for “violations that commonly cause crashes.”

First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

Police Chief Ken Plunkett said his department is “committed to taking impaired drivers off the road. Driving under the influence is not only dangerous, but also has major consequences,” Plunkett added.

A grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety, via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, paid for the checkpoint.
