San Diego Weather: Heat continues Friday, cooler Saturday

A strong ridge of high pressure combined with weak offshore flow is building across the region and bringing unprecedented heat. Here is a look at the record high temperatures we saw Thursday.

As a result, the National Weather Service issued a rare Heat Advisory for this early in March—still considered astronomical winter—for coastal and valley communities through Friday at 8 p.m., with highs in the 70s 80s along the coast and upper 80s to-mid 90s in the valleys, about 15 to 25 degrees above average and likely to set daily record warm temperatures yet again.

With that kind of heat, there’s a widespread risk of moderate heat-related illness for anyone spending long periods outdoors, so be sure to stay hydrated, take breaks, and try to limit time outside during the hottest part of the day.

Heading into the weekend, temperatures will not be as hot, but they will still stay well above seasonal averages. A coastal eddy will bring higher chances of fog tonight through Saturday morning. Expect a mix of 60s and 70s at the coast Saturday with daytime highs trending closer to the 80s across the valleys, but the relief doesn’t last for long. We’ll start warming up again next week, and it could be even hotter from Tuesday through Thursday. It looks like a long stretch of dry and very warm weather ahead, with more record heat possible.
