Overnight storms cause damage, power outages throughout the Philadelphia region

After a severe storm brought strong winds and a downpour of rain to the region late Monday and overnight into Tuesday, neighbors were working to deal with the fallout from the storm.

Extensive damage left behind in Delaware

The National Weather Service is investigating Monday night’s storm system that ripped across parts of central Delaware.

On Tuesday morning, one family in Kent County realized their trampoline was ripped clear out the ground despite being held down with a big steel anchor.

The trampoline smacked the side of the house and was left mangled in the driveway on the other side of the property.

The family’s chicken coop was ripped open but the chickens were not hurt and stayed nearby.

Their playset was shredded and the basketball hoop faceplanted onto the driveway.

In southern Delaware, massive farm irrigation systems were flipped over and turned onto their sides.

Damage in New Jersey

One look around the backyards on Meadowwyck Drive in Laurel Springs, and it’s astonishing no one was seriously injured during the storm. Trees are down on houses, fences torn to shreds, and damage as far as the eye can see.

“I just heard like a ‘shoooooosh’ and then I look outside and my fence is off completely,” Kiara Dietrich said.

In Voorhees, New Jersey, a large tree fell on Cooper Road, blocking the roadway at Rollingwood and Eastwood drives early Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Deptford, New Jersey, power lines fell onto Highland Avenue in the high winds, sparking a fire.

NBC10’s camera captured shots of fire crews extinguishing that fire overnight.

In Medford, at least five utility poles crashed down on Stokes Road after strong winds swept through last night. The Medford Post Office and its schools shut down for the day as it was too dangerous to get down the road.

Storm damage left in Pennsylvania

In the early hours of Tuesday, March 17, just before 5 a.m., NBC10’s camera found a car along Sorrento Road at Conshohocken Avenue in Philly’s Wynnefield Heights section that had been trapped after a tree uprooted in the high winds and crashed down overnight.

And, in Lehigh County, the roof of a home along Devonshire Road in Allentown was blown off in the high winds.

“Never experienced a storm like this before. So, it was pretty crazy,” Allentown resident Kristi Zoccoli said. “I just heard the wind pick up. Sounded like a train coming through. Lasted about two minutes.”

Zoccoli’s car was damaged in the storm and her husband’s car got buried under plywood and shingles after their carport collapsed a little before 11 p.m.
