SLMPD confirms off-duty officer involved in crash earlier this month

ST. LOUIS – A driver who struck a moped in the Boulevard Heights neighborhood earlier this month was confirmed to be an off-duty St. Louis police officer.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the crash happened just after midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Morganford Road and Carondelet Boulevard.

Police said a Ford F-150, driven by the off-duty officer, was traveling southbound on Morganford with a green light.

The officer made a left-hand turn onto Carondelet as the moped was traveling northbound on Morganford across Carondelet. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

The moped driver, a 49-year-old man, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The 44-year-old officer in the pick-up truck was uninjured.

In a statement acknowledging the officer’s involvement, police spokesman Mitch McCoy said the department cannot comment on the matter but added that “the SLMPD holds its officers to the highest of standards both on and off duty. The SLMPD will forward its findings of the investigation to the Circuit Attorney’s Office for review.”
