Pa. troopers kill man who, police say, fired gun at them in North Whitehall Twp.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed by troopers in North Whitehall Township in Lehigh County on Saturday, officials said.
On Sunday, the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office announced that a 27-year-old man — who the office did not provide further identifying details on — died shortly after, allegedly, being involved in an altercation with troopers on Saturday.
According to police, the incident began at around 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, after Pennsylvania State Police from Bethlehem responded to a report of man causing a disturbance at the 2800 block of Rockdale Road.
Upon arriving at the scene, troopers found a 27-year-old man in a 2009 Toyota Camry parked in the driveway of a residence with a handgun in his possession, police said.
Troopers attempted to form a perimeter around the man, who they claim fired his gun more than once and aimed it at troopers several times.
The Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team later arrived at the scene and attempted to reach a peaceful resolution with the man, but the man opened fire at around 2 p.m., police said.
A SERT Trooper engaged with the man and returned fire, resulting in the man getting hit, police said.
The man was then given medical treatment by EMS at the scene and taken to the hospital, police said.
The coroner’s office said the man was pronounced at the hospital at about 6:50 p.m. on Saturday. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026 to determine this individual’s cause and manner of death.
The identity of the man has not been publicly released at this time.
No members of law enforcement were injured during the incident, police said.
The PSP Troop M Major Case Team and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident, police said.
