Man facing new charges, allegedly caused death of 4-day-old son

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- A man who allegedly killed his girlfriend in a Buffalo home earlier this month is facing new charges, including murder in the death of his newborn baby and arson, according to the Erie County District Attorney's Office.
Officials said 30-year-old Kidane Haile strangled his girlfriend 29-year-old Katie Carrig to death before he allegedly poured gasoline and lit the home on fire. The fire erupted on 428 Norwood Avenue in the Elmwood Village on Oct. 18. Carrig and her 4-day-old son were pronounced dead at the scene.
It is alleged that Haile also intentionally caused the death of his newborn son. He was previously only charged with the murder of Carrig.
A grand jury has now returned a superseding indictment charging Haile with two counts of second-degree murder, one count of first-degree murder, and one count of third-degree arson.
Haile was employed at the University of Buffalo as a financial aid advisor. It is unclear whether he is still employed there.
The university previously released a statement, calling the incident a horrific loss.
"The university is aware of the serious charge against Kidane Haile," the school said. "Although the university cannot comment on specific personnel matters, UB has a robust disciplinary process in place to address instances where an employee may have engaged in criminal activity."
If convicted of the highest charge, Haile could face life without parole. He is expected to return to court Dec. 1.
