Chester County pharmacy sold 30,000 doses of uninspected weight-loss drug

A pharmacy in Chester County was fined $1 million and put on probation after compounding and distributing around 30,000 doses of an injectable weight-loss drug without authorization or inspection, Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration announced on Tuesday.

According to officials, Boothwyn Pharmacy on Gale Lane in Kennett Square was producing around 1,000 doses a day of the drug GLP-1, which is found in popular weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy.

The compounding and production of the drugs was taking place in the pharmacy’s two buildings in Kennett Square, which were never inspected or authorized as a drug processing facility, officials said.

Compounding is when a pharmacist “combines, mixes, or alters ingredients of a drug to create a medication tailored to the needs of patients,” officials said.

According to officials, Boothwyn Pharmacy was inspected four times by state representatives between November 2024 and March 2025, but the company never informed the inspectors that compounding or drug production was taking place there.

Officials also said that in order for Boothwyn Pharmacy to be removed from probation, it must:

  • Pay the remainder of the $1 million civil penalty within a year,
  • Obtain proper inspection approvals from the State Board of Pharmacy for all its facilities, and
  • Provide proof it has obtained Compounding Pharmacy Accreditation from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy for its compounding facilities.
