A brutal night for Philly sports as Phillies, Eagles and Flyers all lose

Worst night in Philadelphia sports history? It’s certainly up there. For the first time since 1983, the Phillies, Eagles and Flyers all lost games on the same day, according to sports reporter Bob Vetrone Jr.

The most devastating loss of the night belonged to the Phils. After dropping the first two games of the NLDS against the Dodgers at home, the Phillies stormed back in Game 3 to force a Game 4. Momentum was on the Phillies’ side Thursday in Los Angeles. Cristopher Sanchez was on the mound and a win would send the NLDS back to Philadelphia with a chance to advance to the National League Championship Series for the third time in four seasons.

That hope went wide and fast, as did Orion Kerkering’s failed attempt to get Andy Pages out at home in the 11th inning when the third out was right there at first base. The 2-1 loss ended the Phillies’ postseason in brutal fashion.

Phillies fans shared their reactions to the heartbreaking loss.

“We battled. We thought we were in it,” Alex Coluzzi told NBC10. “Just choked it away.”

James Nickle didn’t have any excuses.

“We had our chance in the first part of the game to get a lead,” Nickle said. “But unfortunately we couldn’t score runs to help Sanchez out. It is what it is I guess at the end of the day but hopefully we’re back again next year.”

John Trerotola, meanwhile, is already looking ahead.

“It was pretty awful but what are we gonna do? It was typical Phillies,” he said. “We’ll see what happens next year. Rob Thomson had a pretty bad outing this postseason. Our team is kind of old so, go Birds, I guess. I mean, on to the Flyers too also.”

But the night wasn’t much better for the Birds or the Flyers.

The Eagles – who were heavily favored in their Thursday Night Football matchup – suffered an embarrassing 34-17 loss to their NFC East rivals the New York Giants. Sloppy defense and multiple turnovers contributed to the Birds’ second consecutive loss. After starting the season 4-0, the Birds are now 4-2 as the team looks to rebound and regain their championship form.

“Two-time Super Bowl champions, they gotta do a lot better than this right now,” one Eagles fan told NBC10. “But thank God it’s only early. It’s early thank goodness.”

Jimena Ortiz wasn’t quite as positive.

“I am so mad. I cannot believe this,” she said. “How did we beat like two really good teams and then we can’t even beat the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants? Like it makes no sense!”

Finally, the Flyers lost their season opener against the two-time defending champion Florida Panthers 2-1. It marked the Flyers’ first regulation defeat in a season opener since 2014-15. The team was 8-0-2 in its previous 10 season openers.

It was certainly a rough night. But if there’s one thing about Philly, the city knows how to bounce back. Hopefully their teams will as well.
