Family and loved ones speak out after Miami restaurant owner fatally shot

The family and loved ones of a business owner in Miami are speaking out after he was fatally shot outside his restaurant Friday night.
According to Miami Police, the shooting happened at Winning and Won Turkey Legs, located at 5090 NW 17th Ave
Police said 40-year-old Dwight C. Wells was playing dominoes with two other people when a subject walked up to him and shot him.
The suspect then fled the scene following the shooting.
NBC6 spoke to Wells’ girlfriend, Lulu, who is still at a loss for words.
“He didn’t deserve that,” she said. “He didn’t. It wasn’t right. He wasn’t just no animal.”
Lulu was sitting right next to him Friday night when she said a masked man walked up to him and shot him to death.
“Dwight was a good person,” she said. “He gave, I see him gave to a lot of people, built a lot of people brands. People respect him in this community.”
Footage captured at the restaurant showed the area covered in police tape as officers searched for clues.
Family, friends, and members of the community were seen watching from afar.
“I was devastated,” said a man. “That was a personal friend of mine. The violence got to stop.”
Wells’ mother, Mary Brown, is now relying on her faith to keep her going.
“You know I’m missing him,” she said. “You know I’m going to miss him. But all is well. God has calmed my spirit, he has given me peace.”
His family said Wells was a pillar in the community by being a business owner and activist who advocated for the community’s youth.
Wells’ aunt told NBC6 that he started the Bikes Up, Guns Down movement.
“That was about helping the kids, the inner city kids, keeping them focused, keeping them out of trouble,” she said.
While no arrests have been made, his family had a message for the man responsible.
“You took a good person away from a family,” his aunt said.
“You can run but you can’t hide,” Brown said. “God got your every move. We are praying that the angels come and get you specifically.”
The investigation remains active.
