3 officers hurt when driver attempts to flee Kensington traffic stop overnight

Three police officers were injured — including one who was hospitalized — officials said, when a driver attempted to flee from a traffic stop in Kensington early Thursday.

According to police, the incident began when police attempted to stop a driver they believed has been driving under the influence of alcohol near the intersection of Kensington and Allegheny avenues at about 3 a.m. on Thursday morning.

However, during the stop, the driver pulled away, striking one officer with the vehicle, officials said.

The driver continued down Allegheny Avenue eventually stopping near B Street where, officials said, a second officer was injured after breaking windows on the vehicle in an attempt to get the driver out of the car.

After the windows were broken out, police said, several officers worked to get the driver out of the car and apprehend the individual, during which time a third officer suffered injuries during this incident.

Eventually, police said, the driver — who police did not immediately provide further identifying information on — was apprehended.

All of the officers suffered minor injuries and, police said, two of them declined medical attention following the incident.

One officer was hospitalized, officials said, due to suffering cuts on their hands when they broke the windows out of the fleeing vehicle in an effort to apprehend the driver.

Police have not yet announced any charges in this case.

But, officials said, an investigation is ongoing.

This is a breaking news story. It will be updated as new information becomes available.
