Wrong-way driver on the run after chase up I-5 from US-Mexico border to downtown San Diego

Authorities are still searching for the suspect who caused a dramatic scene on Tuesday night driving the wrong way on Interstate 5 south at high speeds from U.S.-Mexico border to downtown San Diego.

Around 9:30 p.m., a woman was driving the wrong-way at about 80 miles per hour for about 15 minutes when a California Highway Patrol officer tried a pit maneuver, made contact, but ended up crashing into the center divider, according to the agency.

The chase didn’t come to an end until the woman drove her black Camaro into a truck at C Street before jumping out of her car and running away. The driver of that truck and the CHP officer are both expected to be alright.

The incident caused such a disturbance that another driver had to swerve onto nearby shrubs to avoid the scene.

This is the latest in a string of wrong way crashes around San Diego County, and could have been much worse.
CHP asks anyone with information to contact them.
