Water-main break causes sinkhole on Morena Boulevard, roads expected to reopen Tuesday

A sinkhole prompted a closure that started on Thursday at a major intersection in San Diego’s Morena area, the City of San Diego said.

The cause of the sinkhole was a water-main break located at Morena Boulevard and Napa Street, according to the city.

Around 5 p.m. Friday, the city announced that the repairs were expected to be completed and roads reopened by Tuesday evening.

By Friday evening, city crews completed the repairs to the 8-inch pipe that broke on Thursday, but SDG&E and AT&T crews would need more time to work on their lines in that area, the city wrote on X.

Previously, the city hoped the repairs would be completed and allow roads to reopen Saturday morning.

Due to the extensive time the repairs are expected to take, City Spokesperson Jennifer McBride told NBC 7, the city would send a boil water notice to the 10 impacted businesses.

Road closures:

  • All southbound lanes of Morena Boulevard are closed between West Morena Blvd. and Linda Vista Road.
  • One northbound lane is closed between Linda Vista Road and Cushman Ave.

Road closures will remain in place until repairs are made.

Impacted businesses can receive water wagons in the 900 block of Morena Blvd., the city said. Water bottles are also available.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area during the closures.
