Video: Truck doing donuts on frozen lake falls through ice, gets stuck
A reckless stunt caught on camera at the Jersey Shore is sparking criticism by local leaders and first responders after a pickup truck doing donuts on a frozen lake fell through the ice.
“Stupidity at its finest,” Eagleswood Township Mayor Michael Pasternak said. “It’s not something you should be doing.”
In video from over the weekend and shared on social media, the pickup can be seen spinning in circles on the ice before it broke through and became stuck.
First responders were called to the Stafford Forge Wildlife Management Area on Sunday, Feb. 1 after someone spotted the truck in the ice and they didn’t know if anyone was inside.
“It’s about more than you. You know, when you commit an act like this, when you do something like this, there’s a lot of other lives on the line,” Parkertown Volunteer Fire Company Captain Frank Runza, Jr. said. “It’s about more than you.”
Members of three volunteer fire companies, including two water rescue teams, a dive team and EMS crews met at the lake and determined that the pickup was empty.
“They’re responding to a call where there may be a victim and, until they’re told otherwise, they have to treat it that way,” Mayor Pasternak explained.
Authorities said that a 44-year-old driver was not hurt and was able to get out of the vehicle on his own but never reported the incident.
New Jersey State Police issued the man summonses for multiple motor vehicle offenses including reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
“It’s a perfect example of why driving and stepping on ice can be very dangerous,” Captain Runza said.
As of Thursday, Feb. 5, it’s unclear if there’s a plan to get the truck out of the lake.
NBC10 also found out that the driver doesn’t have a valid license.
