St. Louis Sheriff Alfred Montgomery now in custody over federal charges

ST. LOUIS - Embattled St. Louis Sheriff Alfred Montgomery has been remanded into custody after an evidentiary hearing Tuesday over federal charges.

Montgomery is facing federal indictments for four counts of witness retaliation, one count of witness tampering, one count of deprivation of rights under color of law. He has previously pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Last week, a judge ruled that Montgomery could remain in office following his federal indictments and an order for house arrest.

Additionally, Montgomery faces a separate quo warranto challenge from the Missouri Attorney General's Office seeking to remove him from office, along with a challenge from St. Louis leaders over a new ordinance can force the sheriff’s office to transport jail inmates.

The ongoing legal battles against Montgomery outline several allegations during his tenure, including claims of financial mismanagement, along with being accused of rolling golden dice to make decisions, using a deputy to pick up his kids from school, and ordering the detainment of former St. Louis jail administrator Tammy Ross.
