South Bay crash leaves one hospitalized, suspected DUI driver arrested

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A two-vehicle crash in Chula Vista Wednesday night left one person hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and led to a DUI arrest, authorities said.

According to the Chula Vista Police Department, the collision happened around 7:51 p.m. near La Media Parkway South and Main Street East. Officers arrived to find a white Mercury Sable that had collided with a black Ford Bronco.

Police say the Mercury, driven by 26-year-old Chula Vista man, was headed east on Main Street when it struck the Bronco, which was traveling south on La Media Parkway. The driver of the Mercury was taken to a local hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Ford, a 31-year-old man from Chula Vista, sustained minor injuries.

Investigators believe impaired driving may have played a role in the crash. Coronado was arrested on suspicion of DUI drugs and released to the hospital for medical treatment, police said.

The CVPD’s Traffic Bureau is handling the investigation. The cause of the collision has not yet been determined.
