Shots fired during Northeast Philly attempted car theft, police say

Police said an investigation is underway after the victim of an attempted car theft was able to scare off a suspected thief, but not before shots were fired during the overnight incident in Northeast Philly.

According to police, the incident unfolded at about 1 a.m., when a victim — who police did not immediately provide further identifying information on — exited their home to find an men attempting to steal a vehicle parked along the 1700 block of Strahle Street in the Rhawnhurst section of Northeast Philadelphia on Monday morning.

At that time, police said, the victim, a 48-year-old man, was able to scare off the attempted car thieves.

Officials said, in an update Tuesday, that, after being scared off, the men hopped into a black sedan — described as being a Mercedes-Benz or a Honda — and, as the vehicle pulled away, one of the men inside the car produced a firearm and shot multiple times at the victim.

The victim, police said, was not struck and was unharmed.

Investigators at the scene found two spent shell casings, according to police.

Officials said an investigation into this incident is underway.
