Search underway for hit-and-run driver who killed woman in Chula Vista

An elderly woman taking a walk was killed in a hit-and-run collision in Chula Vista, authorities reported Monday.

Officers responded around 5:30 p.m. Sunday to reports of a woman who was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of North Greensview Drive and Park Meadows Road, according to the Chula Vista Police Department.

Officials said police and Chula Vista firefighters attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead shortly after at a hospital. Family members identified her as Ruizhi You.

The suspect reportedly fled the scene, police said. A vehicle description was not immediately available.

NBC 7 spoke to the victim’s son, Tong Zhu, who says his mother was visiting from China. The son says he just retired from the Navy and was looking forward to spending time with his mom, who came out for a vacation in November.

“If anyone sees this, if you know something, just let me know or let the police department know to help me find the driver,” Zhu said. “I need a reason for my family member, for my mother’s sister. I really don’t know how to tell them.”

Personnel with the CVPD Traffic Bureau were investigating.

Authorities urged anyone with additional information to contact the police at 619-409-5833 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
