San Diego weather: Christmas Eve storm

We are still on track for decent rain over the holidays.

Light showers moved through earlier today, adding up to less than a tenth of an inch most places. More light showers are possible later tonight ahead of the main part of this storm.

Wednesday morning is looking dry, but windy to start. Winds out of the south will be gusting up to 45mph ahead of the rain. The coast and inland valleys will be under a WIND ADVISORY all day.

Right now, it’s looking like the majority of the rain should hold off until Wednesday afternoon. Widespread moderate to heavy rain could bring more than an inch on Christmas Eve with the mountains getting more than that. Wednesday afternoon and evening will be the main punch from this storm. A FLOOD WATCH will be in effect all day Wednesday for the entire county.

Rain chances continue on Christmas day, but totals have been trending down. We may only see a tenth of an inch on Christmas, with dry weather for much of the day. Another band of widespread showers is expected late Christmas night into Friday morning.

We also have shower chances again Friday, before a drier weekend.

This storm is going to be too warm for snow in our local mountains.

When all is said and done, we could end up with around 2” of rain for areas west of the mountains which would mean we’d go from one of the driest Decembers on record to above normal for the month in just a few days.

The surf is also up this week, but with the winds at the coast, surfing conditions will be far from ideal.
