San Diego police investigating vandalism at Kate Sessions Park in Pacific Beach

The San Diego Police Department is asking for help finding the people responsible for damaging the lawn of a popular Pacific Beach park with tire marks.

Mike Kehoe is among the many San Diegans who frequent Kate Sessions Park. That’s where his team, The Brown Bears, meet for football practice. But when they met there last week, he noticed the turf had been damaged with tire marks and divots.

“Who would do this? This is a public utility that people use and frequent. Families come here. Who would come ruin the field and ruin it for everyone?” Kehoe said.

Police said the tire tracks are evidence of what appears to be someone driving in doughnuts on the park’s lawn. Although the incident was reported by a city employee on Tuesday, it’s unclear when it happened.

“We need the public’s help to find this because it’s damaging, and of course there’s that monetary value, but there’s so many families and people that enjoy playing in this park, and we want to make sure we keep the city nice for everyone,” SDPD Officer Anthony Carrasco said.

Bob Ryan also spends a lot of time at the park for sport practices, birthday parties and family gatherings. On Friday, he saw the vandalism for the first time.

“It’s just disappointing that somebody came up and did something foolish like this,” Ryan said.

Police said the damage appears to be limited to the park’s grassy area, but Ryan is hoping it will get fixed soon.

“I’m worried my son is going to run and twist an ankle, or one of his buddies might do it,” Ryan said.

City parks and recreation staff is working to repair the affected turf, according to police. They said the damage estimate has not yet been completed.

“Hopefully, we can get this fixed and move on and it doesn’t happen again,” Ryan said.

“I know it’s definitely important to the community, and this really hurts the community,” Kehoe said.

At this time, police have no suspects identified or video evidence. That’s why they’re asking the community to come forward if they have any information.
