What to Know

  • San Diego County’s coastal areas were under a dense fog advisory until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
  • SAN had experienced at least 85 delays and two cancellations by 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.
  • By 6 a.m. on Wednesday, the airport’s website showed a few delays to departures and arrivals as the airlines were still trying to catch up. According to FlightAware, there were 15 delays and 9 cancellations.

San Diego County’s coastal areas were under a dense fog advisory Tuesday night, and the limited visibility forced a ground stop at San Diego International Airport.

The advisory was issued just after 7:45 p.m. for Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, Encinitas, San Diego, National City and Chula Vista, according to the National Weather Service. The advisory expired at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

However, those foggy conditions overnight prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to issue a ground stop for SAN, effective at 8:48 p.m. Tuesday. It was initially expected to last until 10:15 p.m. but was later extended by an hour.

SAN had experienced at least 85 delays and two cancellations by 9 p.m., according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. The airport’s website was also showing dozens of delayed flights at that time.

“If driving, slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you,” the NWS said.

By 6 a.m. Wednesday, the airport’s website showed a few delays to departures and arrivals as the airlines were still trying to catch up. According to FlightAware, there were 15 delays and 9 cancellations.

Wednesday morning delays are just another headache for travelers. For weeks now, airports across the country have been dealing with TSA agents and air traffic controllers not showing up for work because they are not being paid due to the government shutdown. This has caused flights to be delayed or canceled, as well as long lines at TSA checkpoints.
