San Diego International Airport responds to FAA flight cuts amid government shutdown

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- San Diego International Airport (SAN) is preparing for potential flight reductions as part of a nationwide order from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in response to the ongoing government shutdown.

Starting Friday, SAN will be among 40 major U.S. airports whose flight schedules cold be cut by up to 10%, according to a statement released by the airport.

“Passengers are strongly encouraged to check their flight status before coming to the airport, and plan to arrive no less than two hours before their flight,” said Larisa Casillas, a communication specialist with the airport.

The FAA's decision comes as staffing shortages and reduced federal operations continues to impact the aviation sector during the shutdown, which has now surpassed 36 days — making it the longest since the nation’s founding.

Impacts were already felt Thursday morning when the majority of Southwest Airline flights that were set to arrive were delayed.

SAN officials are urging patience from travelers as the situation evolves.

“We also ask our passengers to exercise patience as airlines work to adjust flight schedules in the wake of this latest disruption,” Casillas said. “We appreciate the ongoing commitment from TSA, FAA, and our partner airlines to maintain the safety and reliability of the national transportation system during this challenging time.”

Despite potential disruptions, airport officials say there top priority remains ensuring a safe and efficient experiences for all travelers.
