San Diego FC's Anders Dreyer named MLS Newcomer of the Year

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego FC forward Anders Dreyer, 27, was named the 2025 Major League Soccer newcomer of the year on Tuesday.

The MLS Newcomer of the Year award is given to the most impactful player with prior professional experience and is voted on by MLS club technical staff, players and the media.

Dreyer received a total vote of nearly 75%, beating newcomers Son Heung-min of Los Angeles FC and Danish compatriot Philip Zinckernagel of Chicago Fire FC. See prior winners and full results here.

Dreyer, who also represents the Denmark national team, was signed as SDFC's second designated player for the club's inaugural season in January. He is now the first Danish player to earn the Newcomer of the Year award.

The SDFC forward's opening MLS season has been one to remember, with Dreyer tallying a record club-best 19 goals and assists, at the time of writing.

According to MLS, nearly 60% of SDFC's goals came from the Danish international, who currently has 38 goal contributions, tied for the third-most goals in a season and the most by a first-year MLS player.

Earlier in the year, the Danish international was named to the MLS All-Star team, starting the match against the Liga MX All-Star, which finished in favor of MLS 3-1.

Along the way, Dreyer has been named Player of the Matchday twice. He was also named player of the month twice, joining former Atlanta United Forward Joseph Martinez as the only league players to do so for an expansion team's debut season.
