San Diego County Sheriff's deputies searching for 3 suspects after shooting in Lakeside

As of Tuesday night, deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office were still looking for three suspects who were seen running away from a shooting near a Lakeside apartment complex that sent one man to the hospital.

Around 3:21 p.m., Sheriff’s Deputies from the Lakeside Sheriff’s Substation responded to a report of a shooting near Ashwood and Mapleview streets in Lakeside. Upon arrival, they found a 22-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg, according to SDSO. The man was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released several hours later with non-life-threatening injuries.

Three people were seen fleeing that area on foot after the shooting happened, witnesses told deputies, who said they searched the area extensively but were unable to locate the suspects. Later, the third suspect was described by SDSO as a man.

Originally, SDSO said there were two suspects and described the first as a 5 feet 6 inches tall, medium build man, 16-20 years old, wearing a hat, a black sweatshirt with a logo on the front, black sweatpants, black and white shoes, SDSO wrote on X at 3:53 p.m.

The second suspect was then described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, medium build, also 16-20 years old, wearing a gray shirt and black pants and no shoes.

Several SDSO vehicles and deputies could be seen in the area on an overhead view from SkyRanger 7.

Lakeside’s El Capitan High School was put on a precautionary lockdown during part of the search, according to the Grossmont Union High School District. By about 5 p.m., the lockdown was lifted as law enforcement gave the school, an “all-clear”, Principal Carrie Gaeir announced. All students and staff are safe, the principal added.

The incident appeared to be isolated, SDSO said, adding that there is no safety threat to the public at this time.

At the scene

At the scene, blood was visible on the ground outside Maplewood Apartments. For a time, people at the complex were urged to shelter in place as deputies searched for suspects.

Anthony Montoya was parked across the street when the shooting happened. His dashcam video captured El Capitan High School students running on the sidewalk to their parents car after hearing at least one gunshot fired.

As Montoya drove closer, he got a clearer look at what happened.

“I saw the kid shot in the leg, bleeding. A woman who saw it all and helped him to wrap it up,” Montoya said.

Blood stains on the sidewalk remained after deputies bagged the clothing and other evidence around the apartments. A K-9 was also brought in to help sniff out evidence. Residents reported hearing a group of people arguing near the pool before hearing at least one shot fired. Investigators said they’re still working to figure out what triggered the shooting.

Freshman Kiana Cueba and her sister were two of the students temporarily put on lockdown at El Capitan High within minutes of school letting out. District officials said it was just a precautionary measure. They don’t believe any of their students were involved. After lockdown was lifted, Kiana and her sister saw the wounded victim.

“It was sad to see someone’s kid shot, don’t know what family going through. That’s a lot to put on their plate,” said El Capitan High School Student Anabele Palomares.

Deputies were asking the public for help finding the three suspects.
