Police identify suspect in murder-suicide at Aveda Institute in Davie

Police have identified the man who they said shot and killed his ex-girlfriend before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide at a Davie beauty school earlier this week.

Jose Orpi, 25, has been identified as the suspect in Tuesday’s shooting outside Aveda Institute South Florida, Davie Police said Friday.

Family members on Thursday identified the victim as 20-year-old Aileen Martinez, of North Miami.

Martinez was a student at Aveda Institute studying cosmetology and had studied at a Miami music school for the past four years, often performing with local bands.

She leaves behind her parents, a brother and a sister.

Police said Orpi and Martinez had previously been in a relationship, and that he shot her inside a vehicle in the Aveda Institute parking lot.

The shooting prompted a massive police response to Aveda Institute, with a stretch of University Drive shut down and nearby schools placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Family members said funeral and burial arrangements for Martinez were underway.
