Philadelphia facing major construction ahead of America's 250th birthday in 2026
Construction is underway in Old City with improvements along Market Street are set to be completed by America’s 250th birthday in 2026.
“Next year, the eyes of the world are gonna be on our Commonwealth as we celebrate 250 years of our democracy in the place where it all began,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said.
On Friday, Nov. 14, Congressman Brendan Boyle highlighted the $850,000 in federal funds that are being used in Philadelphia’s historic district to better the experience for visitors, especially those walking around from Franklin Square to historic sites in Old City.
“So that way we can have a more seamless experience here in the historic district and so that Franklin Square doesn’t feel disconnected from the rest of Independence Mall,” Rep. Boyle explained.
Along with the federal and city dollars, state money is now expected to also help with the preparations.
With Gov. Shapiro signing the state budget this week, he announced $50 million will help with preparing for the FIFA World Cup and the MLB All Star Game in the city of Brotherly Love as well as the NFL Draft coming to Pittsburgh.
“Those events are going to be huge drivers of our economy and tourism and economic activity as millions of people will descend upon Pennsylvania,” Shapiro said.
For Independence Hall, the building is closed for the rest of the year as crews work on projects like painting and cleaning.
