Officials: Man, woman arrested after shots fired at police in Millville, NJ

A man and woman were arrested on Tuesday after, police say, one of them shot at officers after fleeing a traffic stop in an incident that led to an investigation at a home in Millville, New Jersey, overnight.

According to police — who provided details on the incident at about noon on Wednesday — Frances Martin, a 39-year-old woman, and James Zigler III, a 42-year-old man, both of Millville, New Jersey, were arrested in connection to the incident.

The incident began, officials said, when Martin, who was behind the wheel of a Hyundai Santa Fe, was stopped by police at the intersection of 4th and Sassafras streets in Millville at about 6:44 p.m. on Tuesday night.

At that time, police said Zigler, a passenger in the vehicle, provided officers with false information before hopping out of the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

In his attempt to evade arrest, police claim, Zigler turned as he was headed southbound on 6th Street, produced a firearm and fired four shots at the officers who were chasing him on foot.

The officers, officials said, hid behind nearby vehicles to take cover and they initially lost sight of Zigler.

After some investigation, officials said, officers were able to locate Zigler at a residence located along Wheaton Avenue in Millville.

At the home, Zigler was apprehended and a firearm was recovered, police said.

Zigler has been charged with attempted murder, resisting arrest, firearm violations and related offenses.

Martin, police said, was arrested and charged with obstruction. She has been released as she awaits a court date, officials said.

Zigler was being held in police custody as he awaits a detention hearing.

During an investigation into this incident, police cordoned off an area about three blocks around a home in Millville in every direction and officers entered and exited the home for several hours overnight.

And, at one point, an investigator was seen bringing out a bag from the home.

Officials said no officers were injured during the incident.
