Officials identify Delaware state trooper killed in shooting at DMV office
Law enforcement officials in Delaware have shared information about the trooper who was killed in a shooting that happened on Tuesday at a DMV office in New Castle, Del.
He has been identified as Matthew T. “Ty” Snook, 34, of Hockessin, Delaware, a 10-year veteran of the force.
“It is with profound sadness that the Delaware State Police (DSP) announces the line-of-duty death of Corporal Grade One Matthew T. “Ty” Snook, 34, of Hockessin, Delaware, a dedicated 10-year veteran of the Delaware State Police,” officials wrote in a statement released Wednesday.
Police said Snook was shot as he worked an overtime assignment at the Karen L. Johnson Division of Motor Vehicles on Hessler Boulevard in Wilmington.
According to police, Snook was hired on March 6, 2015, as a member of the 88th Delaware State Police Recruit Class.
“Following the successful completion of academy and field training, he was assigned to Troop 6 at Prices Corner. Corporal Grade One Snook served on C-shift throughout his career, where he was known as a dependable, professional, and committed trooper,” officials said in a statement.
Officials said he was a native Delawarean and a graduate of Saint Mark’s High School and the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the wrestling team.
“He was a respected colleague, a trusted partner, and a beloved member of both the Delaware State Police and the community he served,” police said.
He is survived by his wife and their one-year-old daughter.
“Our DSP family extends its deepest condolences to the Snook family. We are forever grateful to them for sharing “Ty” with us and for the sacrifices they made in support of his service to the citizens of Delaware,” read the statement.
Officials said that funeral arrangement information will be released when it becomes available and in coordination with Snook’s family.
Also, officials said, with the approval of Ty’s family, the DSP is sharing information regarding an official fund established to support his family.
