Officer shoots man who was armed with knife inside Philly home, police say

A police officer shot a man who was armed with a knife and standing over a woman inside a Philadelphia home, investigators said.

On Wednesday, Dec. 31, shortly before 3 a.m., two officers from the 22nd District responded to the 1800 block of North Bailey Street for a report of a person screaming.

When the officers arrived they heard an argument inside the home and a woman yelling. The officers knocked but no one answered. As they tried to get inside, a child opened the door for them, investigators said.

Once inside, the officers spotted a 31-year-old man who was armed with a knife and standing over a 31-year-old woman who was lying on the floor, investigators said.

The officers told the man to drop the knife, according to officials. The man allegedly looked at the officers and moved toward them, jumping over a sofa while still holding the knife. One of the officers then opened fire, shooting the man in the chest.

The man was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery and is currently listed in critical condition. Neither the woman who was inside the home nor the officers who responded were hurt during the incident.

The Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation Unit, the Internal Affairs Bureau and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office are all investigating the incident, officials said.

The officer who shot the man is 26 years of age while the second officer is 31, officials said. Both officers were placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. Officials also said both officers activated their body-worn cameras at the time of the incident.
