No shots fired at MIA during precautionary evacuation: Sheriff

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is shedding some light on an incident that happened at Miami International Airport after an unattended bag was found.

According to the MDSO, on Sunday, there was unattended luggage at Departures, Door 21, and as a precaution, the area was evacuated, and the Bomb Squad was called to the airport.

During the response, someone falsely yelled that shots were fired, which caused confusion, panic and led to additional evacuations, MDSO said.

No injuries were reported, and airport operations continue to resume.

The incident came as flights across the country have been canceled or delayed due to a powerful winter storm.

Airport officials on Monday said 112 flights were canceled, 218 were delayed, and more are expected throughout the day and on Tuesday.

Over at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, 118 cancellations and 104 delays.

At MIA, some travelers slept on floor as their flight plans were changed.

“It was very frustrating,” said a traveler. “We are going to Brazil since last night and we were booked to two different flights and waiting until the night.”

Nationwide, there have been more than 10,000 flights grounded due to the storm.
