NJ joins FTC in lawsuit against Uber over Uber One subscription
The state of New Jersey announced that it is among several other states suing Uber because of how difficult it can be to cancel an Uber One subscription, according to the state’s Attorney General’s Office.
In April of 2025, the Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against Uber Technologies, LLC, and Uber USA, LLC, and now the Garden State is part of the effort.
According to the lawsuit, Uber claimed that its Uber One service would save money on rideshare services and deliveries, but if a customer wanted to cancel then it was very difficult.
Even though Uber said that customers can cancel their Uber One subscription whenever they wanted, the service would renew automatically and the process was tedious, according to documents.
Some customers became “stuck” in a loop of dozens of screens and steps just to submit a request to cancel only to wait for a customer service representative to respond for hours, officials explained.
Many customers found that a representative wouldn’t answer quickly enough so they were charged for Uber One.
According to the lawsuit, Uber would charge customers before their set billing date and those who were on a free trial would get charged before their trial was over.
Some customers reported not even knowing they were enrolled into Uber One before they were charged for it, the lawsuit alleges.
New Jersey officials are seeking restitution, penalties, costs and an injunction against Uber.
