Mother and baby hurt in West Philly shooting, police say

A mother and her five-month-old daughter were hospitalized on Sunday morning following a shooting that happened in West Philadelphia, police said.

According to police, officers found the woman and her baby injured after they responded to the 1500 block of North Robinson Street in West Philadelphia for a report of a shooting at about 4:25 a.m. on Sunday.

Officials said the mother — who was later identified by family members as 43-year-old Alayiah Hill — was shot at least six or seven times and her five-month-old daughter was shot once in the leg.

Both Hill and her daughter, Yuri, were taken to a nearby hospital and, in an afternoon update, police said the mother was listed in critical condition while her daughter was listed in stable condition.

“It’s sad. It’s sad. That’s really cowardly, to shoot a baby and her mother,” said a distraught Purnell Tucker, a neighbor on the block. “Unbelievable.”

Investigators believe at least seven shots were fired in this shooting and they are looking for a silver truck that the suspected gunman in this incident is believed to have fled the scene of the shooting in.

Hill’s sister and another child, a boy, were in the house when the shooting occurred, officials said.

On Sunday morning, Amaryiah Mathis, who identified herself as Hill’s sister, told NBC10’s Neil Fischer that both the baby and her sister are expected to survive the incident.

“My sister’s fine. She just got out of surgery. My niece is fine. She’s about to go into surgery,” said Mathis. “It’s just… This is a lot.”

She also told NBC10 that the child’s father may be the individual sought in this incident.

But, as of Monday morning, police had not announced an arrest nor names a suspect in this incident.

Police also did not immediately provide a motive in this shooting.

But, officials said, an investigation is ongoing.
