Man suspected of domestic violence arrested after SWAT standoff in East County
EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A man was arrested Sunday after a three-hour SWAT standoff in El Cajon.
Around 3:22 p.m., authorities received a report from a woman saying that her husband had assaulted her, strangled her and refused to let her leave their motel room in the 1300 block of East Main Street, the El Cajon Police Department (ECPD) said in a news release Monday.
When officers arrived on scene, they were able to safely evacuate the woman, while the man barricaded himself into the room.
Authorities learned the suspect committed multiple violent felonies, and had an outstanding felony warrant for sex registration violations, per ECPD.
The suspect refused to surrender after crisis negotiators attempted to communicate with him.
Authorities used less-lethal pepper ball rounds on the suspect but were unsuccessful in getting him to surrender. SWAT officers then used a flashbang and additional pepper ball rounds, which forced the man to exit the bathroom and surrender without incident, police said.
The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Ruben Castro, was booked into San Diego County Jail.
