Man, wife killed by suspected DUI driver in September SR-76 crash

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A second person has died in a suspected DUI crash that happened in September on State Route 76 in the Pala area.

The incident occurred during the early morning hours of Sept. 28 on SR-76, located east of Magee Road, per California Highway Patrol.

A 21-year-old man from Pala was driving a white Dodge Durango when for unknown reasons he lost control and spun into the opposing traffic lane, crashing head-on into a white Honda Civic driven by a 54-year-old man of Apple Valley, CA, according to authorities.

The driver of the Dodge, his 25-year-old passenger and the driver of the Honda were all taken to the hospital with major injuries. The right-front passenger of the Honda, the driver's wife, was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Oct. 23, the driver of the Honda, identified as Jesus Contreras, died from his injuries, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed.

The driver of the Dodge, identified as Antonio Albert Gonzalez III, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence (DUI), felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and homicide-related charges.
