Man surrenders to police after shooting West Palm Beach officer: Authorities

The man who allegedly opened fire and shot a West Palm Beach officer surrendered to police late Tuesday, authorities said.

The suspect was identified as Emmanuel Keevon Dashawn Mcrae, 22.

West Palm Beach Police Chief Tony Araujo said it all began when officers responded to reports of an altercation at a home along the 300 block of Baker Drive at around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

After they arrived, a person inside the residence opened fire, he said.

Emmanuel Keevon Dashawn Mcrae, 22.

“Officers returned fire, and during the exchange, one officer was struck by a bullet in their ballistic vest,” police said.

That officer, whose name was not provided, was rushed to the hospital in stable condition and has since been released.

Detectives later identified Mcrae as the shooter and said he should be considered “armed and dangerous.” They asked for the public’s help finding him and offered a reward of up to $3,000.

Late that same night, Mcrae surrendered to authorities. He was arrested “without further incident” and charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Video of the scene showed police cars with flashing lights at the scene, as well as units from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
