Man struck, killed by MTS trolley in Barrio Logan was fleeing nearby car crash: SDPD

A trolley struck and killed a man Tuesday in Barrio Logan, authorities reported.

The light-rail tram hit the victim at Main and Sigsbee streets shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Police Department.

Travis Easter, a spokesman for SDPD, told NBC 7 on Wednesday that the man who was killed was driving a black Acura that was in a crash involving a silver Honda nearby and had fled the scene on foot, diving in front of the trolley as it passed by, according to witnesses.

It is not clear if the man was attempting to flee or had intentionally been struck by the trolley. The Acura belonged to the victim, Easter said, adding later that it is not known if drugs or alcohol played a role in the incidents. The other driver sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The man died at the scene, SDPD officer Sarah Foster said on Tuesday.

Easter said the investigation is ongoing.

The rail fatality forced closures of traffic lanes in the immediate area, according to police.
