Man charged with attempted murder after shooting girlfriend in SW Miami-Dade: MDSO
A man accused of shooting his girlfriend in southwest Miami-Dade was arrested on Friday, deputies said.
Giovanni Echevarria, 31, was charged with second-degree attempted murder.
During his court appearance on Saturday, a judge denied Echevarria’s bond.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Echevarria and the victim, who he’s been in a relationship for about three years, were a their home Friday morning, lying together in a bedroom, when the two got into a verbal argument.
An arrest report said that the verbal argument then became physical, and Echevarria grabbed a gun and fired one round at the victim, which struck her in the chest.
After the victim was shot, the report said, she was able to call 911 and said “He shot me in the chest.”
When deputies arrived at the home, the victim was found, and she was taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in critical condition, the report said. On her way to the hospital, she told deputies that she and Echevarria “Were in an argument, but not like that.”
The woman suffered two gunshot wounds: one to her shots and another to her butt.
When Echevarria was being questioned by deputies, he told them that he was in an argument with the victim and pointed the gun at his head in an attempt to end his life, the report said.
He said the victim tried to take away his gun, and when they were struggling for the gun, he struck her in the liver with the gun and then the gun fired one shot, striking her.
During a search of their home, detectives found the gun and a spent casing.
Echevarria was charged and taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Online records showed that Echevarria had 72 priors, 43 of which were criminal and had one other arrest.
