A man has been arrested in Mexico in connection with the murder of a man who went missing from Hialeah last year and whose body was later found in a recycling bin, authorities said.

Alfredo Carballo Gonzalez was taken into custody on Tuesday by Mexican authorities and extradited back to South Florida, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office officials said Thursday.

The 32-year-old faces charges of second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence in the August 2025 disappearance of Daylon Fleitas Gonzalez.

A second suspect, 27-year-old Ariely Alvarez Cabrera, Carballo Gonzalez’s girlfriend, was also arrested in Mexico back in September and extradited to South Florida.

She faces charges of accessory after the fact and tampering with physical evidence.

Authorities sought the public’s help in finding the couple after Fleitas disappeared on Aug. 3. According to investigators, Fleitas met with Gonzalez on that day in the area of 95th Avenue and Northwest 106th Street.

Carballo Gonzalez was seen entering Fleitas’ truck, where an altercation took place, investigators said. Shortly after, Carballo Gonzalez placed a recycling bin in the bed of the Fleitas’ truck and drove it away, with Cabrera following him in another vehicle.

On Aug. 8, detectives found Fleitas’ truck abandoned with blood stains in the front driver’s seat and door, along with a backpack containing blood-stained clothing and shoes.

Detectives searched the area nearby and found the recycling bin with Fleitas’ body inside in a wooded area along Southwest 203rd Avenue.

Fleitas’ body had numerous sharp force injuries to the face, neck and back, authorities said.

According to a warrant, Fleitas was meeting with Carballo Gonzalez to receive $10,000 that Carballo Gonzalez owed him.

Fleitas’ girlfriend said she received a text message from an unknown number in which the sender claimed to be Fleitas and said he’d been stopped by police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement and would be fleeing to Mexico, the warrant said.

The girlfriend said she asked for specific information only Fleitas would know and after the sender deflected an answer, she believed it was a hoax.

Fleitas’ brother also told investigators he received a call on Aug. 4 from Carballo Gonzalez, who claimed he was supposed to meet Fleitas but he never showed, the warrant said.

Carballo Gonzalez told the brother he owed Fleitas $2,500, and later sent Fleitas’ brother the money through Zelle, the warrant said.

Authorities didn’t say how or when Alvarez Cabrera and Carballo Gonzalez made their way to Mexico, but a prosecutor described their alleged journey during a bond court appearance by Alvarez Cabrera.

“They flee to Mexico, they get somebody to drive them to Texas or somehow they get to Texas, from Texas they go into Mexico and they go into Cancun, the intelligence from the Marshals and the police officers is that they wanted to return to Cuba,” the prosecutor said.

A 5-month-old infant was with the couple and authorities had been concerned the infant was in danger but the baby was later found and was safe back in Florida, officials said.

Alvarez Cabrera’s attorney, Bijan Sebastian Parwaresch, told NBC6 that she’s innocent and they’re strongly fighting the charges.

“She has always assisted the best she could in the investigation but she was not directly involved in his apprehension,” Parwaresch said.

Parwaresch said Alvarez Cabrera was being held against her will in a hotel in Mexico but managed to escape and turn herself in. He said the couple hasn’t communicated since then.

Alvarez Cabrera is currently on house arrest while Carballo Gonzalez remained in custody while awaiting trial.
