Man arrested after shooting places South Jersey school on lockdown on Wednesday
A fight between two people in South Jersey resulted in a shooting that was reported near a school on Wednesday, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.
This all started when a man got into a physical altercation with Jasheir Hawkins, 19, at the Woodlake Apartments on the 200 block of North Evergreen Avenue around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, prosecutors said.
After the fight, Hawkins is accused of running away and into a wooded area behind the apartments, officials explained.
The man involved in the fight got into the passenger seat of a third person’s car and the two drove to their house, according to officials.
When they got to the house, they reported hearing gunshots, officials said.
The driver of the car suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and jumped into the backseat to hide while the other person drove to the hospital, officials explained.
A witness who was nearby called 911 and described the person who allegedly opened fire, according to prosecutors.
Investigators were able to identify Hawkins as the suspect described by the caller, prosecutors said.
Hawkins was arrested in Mount Ephraim, New Jersey, and was charged with attempted murder and weapons charges.
He could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.
Evergreen Avenue School was not in session when the shooting happened, but after school activities were placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution.
