Man arrested after father says he accidentally shot wife in Miami Springs

A man is facing charges after allegedly shooting his wife accidentally in their Miami Springs home, police and family members said.

Michael Martinez, 41, is facing charges of culpable negligence and improper exhibition of a firearm in the shooting that happened Sunday night at a home on Esplanade Drive, an arrest report said.

Miami Springs Police had responded to the home along with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, who airlifted the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, the report said.

According to the report, a witness told investigators he saw Martinez handling a shotgun and went to his room while Martinez and the victim were in the kitchen.

He said he went to his room and heard a gunshot, and when he came out he saw the victim on the floor with a gunshot wound to her chest, the report said.

The witness said Martinez called 911 and “appeared to be in a state of shock,” telling investigators they have a healthy relationship with no domestic violence history, the report said.

Detectives later spoke with the victim, who said Martinez had obtained the firearms earlier in the day, the report said.

She said she was washing dishes and he was handling a revolver when she was “spontaneously shot in the chest,” the report said.

She added that she believes it was an accident, the report said.

The woman wasn’t identified in the report but a man ho said he’s Martinez’s father told NBC6 that Martinez accidentally shot his wife while cleaning his gun.

Martinez was booked into jail early Monday and expected to appear in bond court later.

Neighbors said they were shocked to see the police response on the normally quiet street.

“Shocked. I mean, we heard the helicopter, we saw a bunch of ambulance lights. I came out here and I heard that there was a shooting just down the street and this helicopter landed in the golf course,” said Alex Andreu. “It’s surprising. I’ve lived here for over 20 years and nothing like this has ever happened before, very quiet neighborhood, so we’re very surprised to see that there’s a shooting down the street.”
