Lauderdale-by-the-Sea boxer and gym owner's body found in canal: BSO
The body of a Lauderdale-by-the-Sea boxer and gym owner was found in a canal after he was reported missing, deputies said.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), a missing persons alert was issued on Saturday for 35-year-old Johnathan Scibica after he was seen leaving Cheers Bar at 941 E Cypress Creek Road in Fort Lauderdale.
During their search on Sunday, deputies found Scibica’s vehicle in a waterway near the 900 block of Northwest 63rd.
“We went into the canal, and we recovered the truck, and sadly, he was inside the vehicle deceased”, explained BSO’s public information officer, Claudinne Caro.
Elia Carranza, his business partner and friend, told NBC6 that the moment he didn’t show up for work Friday morning, she knew something was wrong.
“I thought he was in a deep sleep, then he missed his client,s and then we called 911, we went to police and began the search”, she added.
Those closest to Scibica say his loss is being felt deeply throughout the gym and the larger community.
“I hurt for my team and the community. We all lost him. I just never wanted to do anything of this without him”, Carranza shared with NBC6.
Deputies have not released a cause of death and say the investigation remains ongoing.
