Knife-wielding man charged after being shot by Philly police, officials say
A man, who was shot by police after he, allegedly, stormed at officers while wielding a knife when he was found standing over a woman in a North Philly home last month has now been charged with assault and related offenses.
According to police, Keith Freeman, 31, has been charged with aggravated assault, weapon possession and related offenses after he, allegedly, jumped over a sofa towards officers after he was found standing over a woman while holding a knife in a North Philly home on Dec. 31, 2025.
In that incident, police said, officers were called to a home along the 1800 block of North Bailey Street on a report of a person screaming.
Upon arrival, officials said, the officers heard arguing and a woman’s voice yelling inside the home, but no one answered the door when the police knocked.
However, a child eventually opened the door and let the officers into the residence, officials said.
Once inside, the officers, allegedly, found Freeman standing over a 30-year-old woman while he was armed with a knife, according to police.
Investigators said the officers — who had body-worn cameras on and activated at the time — then issued commands for Freeman to drop his weapon.
Instead of complying, officials said Freeman moved in the direction of the officers, even jumping over a sofa in their direction, before an officer fired one shot at Freeman, hitting him in the chest.
A second officer at the scene did not discharge their weapon in this incident, police said.
Freeman was taken to a nearby hospital after the shooting where, officials said, he remains in critical condition.
The officer who fired the shot, identified as Nicholas Jones, 26, assigned to the department’s 22nd police district, has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation into the shooting.
No officers, nor the woman or child involved in this incident, were harmed during this confrontation, police said.
An investigation into this incident, officials said, remains ongoing.
