'Great stupidity': Trump rages at NATO ally in late night Truth Social post

Donald Trump has lashed out at a NATO ally in a late night Truth Social post.

The president has already taken tariff action against several NATO nations in retaliation to their stance on Greenland. Trump and his administration has made it clear they want to take Greenland for national security reasons. NATO members have opposed this aim, saying it would undermine the intergovernmental organization should Trump take action against another member state.

Trump has since applied a 10% tariff to several countries, including Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Germany. In a post to Truth Social, the president raged at the UK for giving up an island with a US military base on it.

He wrote, "Shockingly, our 'brilliant' NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER."

"There is no doubt that China and Russia have noticed this act of total weakness. These are International Powers who only recognize STRENGTH, which is why the United States of America, under my leadership, is now, after only one year, respected like never before."

"The UK giving away extremely important land is an act of GREAT STUPIDITY, and is another in a very long line of National Security reasons why Greenland has to be acquired. Denmark and its European Allies have to DO THE RIGHT THING. Thank you for your attention to this matter. PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP."

Trump also shared text screenshots between himself and French President Emmanuel Macron. The French President wrote, "We are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran. I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland."

Another screenshot from Trump was posted just minutes after he called out the "great stupidity" of the UK. Trump wrote, "Thank you to Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO!" Attached was a screenshot of a text received from Rutte.

It reads, "Mr. President, dear Donald - what you accomplished in Syria today is incredible. I will use my media engagements in Davos to highlight your work there, in Gaza, and in Ukraine. I am committed to finding a way forward on Greenland. Can't wait to see you."
