Grand Island votes against new recreational center

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Residents of Grand Island have voted against building a new recreational center for the town.

Of the over 6,000 residents who voted Tuesday, just over 65% of them voted against the recreation center.

The center would have cost over $9 million to build and would have increased property taxes an additional 30 cents per $1,000 of assessed values.

The town proposed the center following a growing population and demand, they said. It would have provided recreation for all ages to promote community health, social connection, and economic vitality and would have been located on Alvin Road.

Ideas for the center included pickleball, batting cages, and club meeting space. The town said the center would have been highly competitive for state grant funding.
