CORONADO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Police are investigating a stabbing involving two students at Coronado Middle School that sent one of them to the hospital.

Officers with the Coronado Police Department responded to the incident at the school around 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday.

An altercation took place in the school library during a class break during which a 7th grade boy stabbed a 7th grade girl twice with a pocket knife, authorities said.

Detectives at the scene interviewed several witnesses and officers conducted a safety sweep of the campus. After investigating, they determined there is no active threat to students or staff and the school is currently not on lockdown.

Meanwhile, the girl was taken to Rady Children's Hospital for her injuries and the boy was taken into custody.

Due to both individuals being minors, the police department said it will not be releasing further information at this time regarding the incident.

The Coronado Police Department is still investigating the incident.
