French Polynesia Creates World’s Largest Marine Protected Area

French Polynesia has created the world's largest marine protected area, placing 520,000 square kilometres of the Pacific off-limits to mining, trawling and industrial fishing. President Moetai Brotherson framed the move as an assertion of ecological sovereignty by a Pacific people, expanding fully protected waters to an area nearly twice the size of mainland France.
