Food distribution event being held in Escondido amid federal shutdown
ESCONDIDO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Organizations are coming together in North County to help those in need as critical food assistance programs have come to a halt due to the federal government shutdown.
On Thursday, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Interfaith Community Services and Feeding San Diego will be distributing food and supplies to families and individuals affected by the federal shutdown.
It's one of several efforts across the county to support those affected by the government shutdown.
Last week, the San Diego Food Bank also stepped up support for federal workers who were not receiving paychecks.
The emergency food distribution event will be held at the Betty & Melvin Cohn Center at 550 West Washington Ave. in Escondido.
The County of San Diego recently announced that people who are expecting to receive CalFresh, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), benefits on Saturday, Nov. 1 should expect delays, adding that the length of the delay is unknown at this time.
According to Feeding San Diego, the organization and its partner agencies, including Interfaith Community Services, have been responding to a surge in people seeking food assistance since the shutdown began on Oct. 1.
