Family of 5 displaced by early morning house fire in Olney

Five people have been displaced, officials said, after an early morning house fire tore through a rowhome in Philly’s Olney community early Tuesday.

According to police, the incident happened at about 3:05 a.m., when firefighters responded to a fire at a home along the 100 block of West Nedro Avenue in Philadelphia’s Onley community.

Family members told NBC10’s Brenna Weick that they escaped flames after an adult son at the household burst out of his bedroom and alerted the rest of the sleeping family.

Officials said the flames were contained by about 3:20 a.m.

As of about 6 a.m., officials had not said what may have caused the flames but family members told NBC10 they were concerned that it may have been an electrical issue.

No one was hurt in this incident and, officials said, the Red Cross is working to ensure the family has a place to stay.

Also, family members expressed concerns that they may have lost a cat and a kitten in the fire, but they are hoping the animals are safe and are hiding out as fire crews work at the scene.

An investigation into what may have started this incident is currently underway, officials said.

This is a breaking news story. It will be updated as new information becomes available.
