The family and people in the community want answers after a 6-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run in City Heights over the weekend.
The child, identified by family members as Lucas Chery Louis, was struck by a car while crossing University Avenue near Northgate Market with an adult just before 7 p.m. Saturday, according to investigators. When first responders arrived, they performed CPR and transported Lucas to Rady Children’s Hospital, where they say he died.

San Diego police say the car left the scene before officers arrived.
“Our investigators are looking at every aspect that they can,” SDPD Lt. Travis Easter told NBC 7 on Monday. “We’re checking witnesses. We’re checking areas for cameras. We’re checking everything that we can so we can find whatever evidence that is out there to find this vehicle and the person that is involved.”
The police department says the vehicle and driver description are still under investigation.
Meantime, his family is remembering him as an intelligent, funny and caring child who loved his family.
“He was the best brother,” said Lucas’ sister Catra, who is also a child. “He always wanted to be a hero around the world.”
Catra described what she remembers most about Lucas.
“I remember that he always played with me, and he loved everybody,” she said.
People in the neighboring community are commenting on the incident and urging the driver to turn themself in.
“I would tell them to come forth. That’s the right thing to do,” said Massah Gondor, who lives nearby.
Gondor says she wants to see changes made to the area.
“Like a place for people to cross, you know, whether it’s in the middle or just like safety, like signs for the drivers to slow down or speed bumps,” she said.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to reach out to SDPD or Crime Stoppers.
